It fits in the space, so it must be a compact.

E92: 181x70.2x54.9"
FB Civic Coupe: 176.1x69.1x55.0"
It’s barely bigger than a Civic coupe of similar vintage. It’s a compact.

So park another one next to it, then. Who needs to open doors, anyway?

I’m not sure of whether I didn’t know the 3 was that small or the Civic is that big.

The EPA does define the 3-series as a compact car

They also say my M3 gets 20 mpg on the highway. I’m not sure I trust them to judge the size of the 3.

apparently they do it by interior volume + cargo volume. I mean as measurements for the size of a car go, that’s about as good as any. And oddly their mpg estimates for my car are actually easy to beat.
I have another burner, try to guess it!

Probably the later. Civics have been getting bigger and heavier since forever.
Hence why James May said “The Fit is what the Civic was.”

At this point, anything smaller than an F-150 is considered a compact. I fit my 2000 540it into the “compact” spots super easily.

I think the new F150 is bigger than the 2007 F350 I had as a work truck.

I think maybe since you owned a 1-series for a while you didn’t realize the 3 was that small. Really up until the F30, the 3-series has a compact car all along. Just like the C-class, the styling and premium features make it punch above it’s class a little bit, but really they’ve always been similar in size to a Civic/Corolla/Focus/Elantra etc. of similar vintage.
